The subject is being there.
A street corner. A bookshop. Someone waiting. A view you pass every week and have never really looked at. This publication is for the moment you stop and open a sketchbook.
Pen, pencil, watercolour, markers and mixed media all have a place. So do beginners, awkward lines, short sessions and drawings made from a comfortable chair. A good page can begin with a very small question.
A family resemblance.
Urban Sketching sits alongside Watercolourist and Captured Moment: substantial looking, useful practice and an interest in the people and places beyond the equipment. Mark’s own paintings have a quiet home in the artwork gallery and at his studio.
A wider community.
This is an independent publication, not an official chapter of the international Urban Sketchers organisation. Explore their manifesto and community for the wider movement. Their emphasis on direct observation and the record of time and place is a useful starting point.
Bring a useful question.
For corrections, an idea for a feature or a note about a drawing, contact Mark through his studio. Include the page or work you mean. A specific observation is always welcome.
